Backstage Pass with BD Wong, star of Herringbone
A book
project and exhibition that I'm working on is photo-documenting my colleagues and contemporaries
in the arts, fashion and journalism, with a couple of astronauts thrown in for good measure. I am fortunate to be surrounded
by many accomplished artists who have granted me unprecedented access to their lives for my Asian American Pioneers Series
and other portrait collections. Collaboration is key in this very intimate process. Last week, BD Wong invited
me to the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, NJ, where he is starring in a musical called Herringbone.
Set
in the depression era, Herringbone is the story of an 8-year-old boy named George who discovers his gift for tap
dancing. When all of the adults in his life him rush to exploit his talents, George finds himself in a supernatural
struggle for control over body and soul.
It was fascinating to watch BD collaborate
with his director Roger Rees and choreographer Darren Lee, as they integrated
each of the eleven characters he portrays seamlessly to help tell this ghost story with a vaudeville twist. BD's
performance is a veritable tour-de-force which should not be missed. To receive a 15% discount off the ticket price,
call McCarter Ticket Office at (609) 258-2787 and mention AsianConnections.com. See you on the aisle.

Beijing Bound
At the beginning of August, I unexpectedly found myself
on a flight to Beijing. My father, a U.S. citizen, had an emergency operation and had his gallbladder removed. He spent the next 43 days in the hospital due to complications from his diabetic condition, but was lucky to have a great
support network of friends who took care of him before, during and after my visit. Being a foreigner in a Chinese Hospital where they only speak Chinese and don't believe
in painkillers wasn't a cakewalk as you can well imagine. My goal was to bring him home, but he wasn't well
enough to travel when it was time for me to return home. I am happy to report that he is back in the U.S. and on
the mend. Thanks to our China family.
